The effect of diabetes on women’s sexuality have been less studied and less publicized than men. With diabetes blood glucose levels become abnormally high and interfere with both the nervous system’s ability to deliver blood which causes sexual dysfunction.
Women can feel the loss of libido and vaginal dryness if they suffer from diabetes.
Women who have diabetes can maintain sexual function by doing daily exercise, reducing their weight (if overweight), and following a healthy diet which can keep their blood glucose levels in check are needed to help restore sexual function in both men and women.
There are several other strategies that can be used to maintain sexual desire despite diabetes which include the following:
- Quit smoking.
- Using water-based lubricants during sex.
- Seeking professional help from a trained sexologist.
Sexual problems in men can be one of the first sign of diabetes, and it seems likely that the same is true for women. If women are experiencing a decrease in their sexual function, they should consult a doctor.
