Recent studies suggest that men who are overweight have lower testosterone levels. Lower testosterone levels can cause a number of problems among aging men.
Some of these problems include:
- Reduced sex drive
- Depression
- Weight gain
Testosterone is a male sex hormone that is responsible for sperm production, facial and body hair, bone density and the production of red blood cells.
This study included 44 men, 64% which were overweight, the rest were of normal weight. These men were required to do  40-60 minutes of aerobic exercise 1-3 days a week for 3 months. The men who were overweight saw a big increase in their testosterone levels at the end of the 3-month study.
The men who exercised the most experienced a higher increase in testosterone levels. Although the obese men did lose some weight, researchers found that it was the vigorous physical activity that increased testosterone.
So this another reason to start exercising.
