Low aerobic activity in individuals can have the same negative health effects as smoking. And, although the rate of smokers has gone down, the next step is to increase the amount of activity that each individual does. It is shown that a lifestyle that does include physical activity leads to higher rates of heart disease, diabetes, and cardiovascular issues. This study was primarily focused on mortality rates in men.

Individuals were tested over their lifetime to measure the effects of low or high physical activity and has gone on for over half a century, making the results of this study, the longest study of its type. The men were tested approximately every 10 years. The follow-on research will include studying women to see if the results are gender specific.
