The Zika virus is a health concern that is becoming a global health issue. According to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the Zika virus may be sexually transmitted.
The information comes from one known case that was sexually transmitted from a man who had contracted the virus in Brazil and a woman he shared intimate relations with.
Upon testing both subjects, the genetic markers in the virus were identical. This means that the virus had to be transmitted from one subject to the other. Given the presence of the virus in differing bodily fluids, they used a process of elimination to discover that the virus was sexually transmitted.
The virus was present in the man’s semen for three weeks after infection. As of now there are no guidelines for sexual intercourse with an infected person.
