An interesting study done in Denmark done over a period of 10 years from 1997 to 2006 came up with a connection between erectile dysfunction and the higher earnings of their wife. While the authors of the study said that most men had no problems with their wife earning more than them and infact they were even proud of the fact; the study paradoxically also found that these men were also more likely to suffer from sexual dysfunction.
What the result of this study highlights is the connection between the sexual performance of men and the socio-cultural norms. Most societies view the husband as the main breadwinner for the family and the wife’s income as just supplemental, which is especially true in countries like India. Even though this perception is changing especially in urban areas of our country. a husband earning less than his wife may cause underlying psychological issues which may get translated in their performance in bed.
Unfortunately other studies have also shown a higher rate of depression among men who earn less than their wife and also a higher rate of domestic abuse in such households.
All this just highlights the problem in our society which has to do with preconceived macho image of the male which obviously takes a dent when he earns less than his spouse. This perception needs to change as there is absolutely nothing wrong with a wife earning more than the husband and in todays ever changing socio economic environment this is becoming more common place.
When it comes to erectile dysfunction, what needs to be noted is that there are lot of factors ( both physical and psychological) that can cause it and the insecurity caused by the wife earning more than the husband is just one of the psychological triggers. If you suffer from ED then make sure you get help from a qualified professional who can help you identify the cause and guide you towards the right treatment which may include medication or counselling or a combination of both.
