Fertility and diet: Is there a connection?

June 18, 2018 by Dr. Arora Team

Fertility and diet

Fertility and diet: A new Harvard Medical School study has determined that certain nutrients in food may enhance a woman’s chance of getting pregnant. Specifically, food containing folic acid, vitamin B12, or omega-3 fatty acids may positively affect fertility, while foods containing antioxidants, vitamin D, soy, and other ingredients appear to have no effect.

The heart healthy foods found in the Mediterranean diet may also be good for women who want to get pregnant. Although more studies need to be done on the specific amounts of nutrients needed to enhance fertility, it’s recommended that all people who wish to be parents eat a healthy, well balanced diet.

Key Takeaways:

  • According to a new Harvard study, diet can have an impact on a woman’s fertility status in a number of different ways.
  • Folic acid, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamin B12 are all very beneficial for women trying to get pregnant naturally.
  • Soda and energy drinks should be off-limits for any couple trying to conceive because the sugary beverages are linked to low fertility in both sexes.

“Researchers from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Harvard Medical School have just published a review of past studies that examined the impact of diet on fertility.”
