Recently, A video surfaced in which Donald Trump was making statements that objectify women. He boasted of seducing a married woman and non-consensually groped women. Many would list this as an example of rape culture.
Dr. Sherry Hamby explains how this is an example of objectification and how it is rewarded within our culture. It is expected of men to act manly. Objectification contributes to men’s self-esteem as it boosts the belief that they are sexually competent and masculine.
The responses that men receive back for boasting about sexual conquests encourage their behavior. If we changed responses to these boasts to be more aligned to social expectations we could change this behavior. For example, we could change responses to non-consensual sexual boast to statements such as”I don’t need to force sex on women.
