Chemicals are used in soap and body wash to increase scent, or to kill harmful germs. Most of these are do their job without any side effects. But a recent study by the University of California showed that some of the soap or body wash products are using a chemical called triclosan that can sometimes cause muscle weakness and impair muscle activity. Studies found that could disrupt sex and thyroid hormones and other bodily functions.
The result is the Food and Drug Administration has decided to ban triclosan—and 18 other antibacterial chemicals, including triclocarban, which is found in many bar soaps—from being used in antibacterial soaps.
The FDA clarified further the issue by stating that soaps with these chemicals had “no scientific evidence that they are any better than plain soap and water.” The ban will go into effect in the U.S. in September 2017.
