Researchers studied 200 couples who had been married less than 6 months. The study focused on a 14 day period and measured how often the couple’s had sex, marital satisfaction, and sexual satisfaction.
Researchers were also interested in how long sexual satisfaction lasted. Sexual afterglow is the feeling of contentment and increased sexual satisfaction after the actual physical act is over.
Some couples experienced satisfaction up to 48 hours after the physical act of sex. Sexual afterglow is related to romantic bonding as a couple. Marital satisfaction over time increased in couples who reported a long sexual afterglow.
This study included only young, mostly heterosexual couples but the researchers feel the results will hold true in homosexual and older couples. They believe that sex activates dopamine and oxytocin receptors in the brain, which is often associated with the feeling of romantic love.
