Are There Any Effects of Masturbation on the Body’s Testosterone Levels?

October 8, 2024 by Dr. Arora Team

Effects of Masturbation on Testosterone

Masturbation is a common practice that both men and women engage in. However, it also has been linked with several misconceptions and myths.

One of the most frequently asked questions is the effects of masturbation on testosterone levels in men. In this blog, we will talk about the link between masturbation and testosterone levels which will help you make an informed decision in future.

Masturbation and Testosterone – Understanding The Link

Testosterone is a crucial sex hormone that is primarily produced in the testes in men and also in smaller amounts in the ovaries and adrenal glands in women.

It plays a significant role in muscle mass, bone density, red blood cell production, and overall mood. Testosterone plays a critical role in proper sexual functioning and influences various parameters of sexual health.

Masturbation involves sexual stimulation of the genitals that leads to orgasm. It is an act of self-pleasure that ultimately releases neurotransmitters like dopamine and endorphins that relax the body.

There is limited research on the direct effects of masturbation on testosterone levels, but there are a few studies that provide some insights-

Short-Term Effects: Some studies suggest that testosterone levels may temporarily increase during sexual arousal and orgasm.

This usually happens due to physiological responses that take place during sexual activity. Mostly the spike is temporary and returns to its usual levels in some time.

Long-Term Effects: Studies on the effects of masturbation on testosterone have found that masturbation generally does not alter testosterone levels. The body’s mechanism is highly regulated and maintains the hormone levels irrespective of the frequency of sexual activity.

There is some evidence to suggest that refraining from ejaculation for extended periods might lead to a slight increase in testosterone levels.

A study found that abstaining from ejaculation by any sexual activity be it self or with a partner for three weeks resulted in a peak in testosterone levels on the seventh day.

However, it is crucial to understand that this spike is temporary, and testosterone levels come back to their original level soon.

Masturbation Leads to Erectile Dysfunction: One common question is: “Can masturbating too much cause erectile dysfunction (ED)? Again this has no scientific explanation or backing. Excessive masturbation with pornography can reduce sensitivity to real-life sex, making it harder to get aroused. This is not erectile dysfunction but a psychological issue that affects sexual performance.

Myths and Misconceptions

Masturbation is often linked with myths that lead to misinformation about its effects on health.

Some common misconceptions include:

Masturbation Causes Permanent Testosterone Depletion – It is commonly propagated to keep people from masturbating as it is typically looked at with stigmatic attitudes.

However, there is no scientific basis for this claim. The body’s endocrine system is efficient at regulating hormone levels which ensures that masturbation would not lead to permanent changes in testosterone production.

Masturbation Reduces Muscle Gain: This myth is likely to be linked to testosterone’s role in muscle development. However, there is no evidence to suggest that masturbation affects muscle growth or athletic performance.

Psychological and Emotional Aspects

There is almost no physical impact of masturbation, but it may have psychological and emotional aspects that affect the well-being.

Masturbation can be a healthy part of sexual expression and self-care and leads to improved mood, stress relief, and better sleep.

These factors, in turn, can have indirect positive effects on overall health and also help in maintaining hormonal balance.

It also helps partners understand each other better and opens new possibilities where both partners feel sexual fulfilment like never before.

Another picture is the feelings of guilt or shame associated with masturbation, which can lead to stress and anxiety. Chronic stress can also negatively impact hormone levels along with other health problems.

Bottom Line

To sum it up, there are negligible effects of masturbation on testosterone levels. A few studies have indicated minor and short-term fluctuations in testosterone levels during sexual activity, these changes do not have a long-lasting impact on overall hormone balance.

Understanding the myths and realities surrounding masturbation and testosterone is crucial for maintaining good sexual health and well-being.
