Curved penis may increase cancer risk

Caution road sign

Peyronie’s disease, where the penis is curved by scar tissue, may be associated with a heightened risk of cancer in men, new research suggests.

Compared with men with erectile dysfunction, men with PD had a 10% greater total risk of cancers, particularly those of the stomach, skin, and testes.

How PD causes cancer is still not clear, but the researchers suggest genetics may have a role. More studies are needed to confirm the link and to better understand how PD leads to cancer.

Key Takeaways:

  • New research suggests that Peyronie’s disease, in which scar tissue causes the penis to be curved, may be associated with an elevated risk of cancer in men.
  • Compared with men with erectile dysfunction, men with PD had a 10% greater total risk of cancers.
  • Further studies are needed to explain how PD causes cancer, but the researchers suggest genetics may play a role.

“When this was broken down, men with Peyronie’s had a 43 percent greater risk of stomach cancer, a 19 percent increased risk of melanoma, and a 39 percent increased risk of cancer of the testis.”
