Urologic conditions lead to depression, sleep issues in men

October 7, 2019 by Dr. Arora Team

Urologic conditions

A  University of California at Irvine (UCI) study observed that men with urologic conditions like erectile dysfunction or a variety of prostate issues are at higher risk of depression and sleep difficulties.

The study published in the International Journal of Impotence Research suggests that doctors treating patients for urological problems should be more cognizant of the increased risk of psychological and sleep consequences.

Depression and sleep disturbances were also associated with the hypogonadism, a condition in which men don’t make enough testosterone.

Also, almost half of the men in the study (47.9%) scored moderate to severe in the erectile dysfunction questionnaire

Key Takeaways:

  • Urologic problems maybe transient in some cases but in others they can be chronic and can have a negative impact on the overall quality of life of the patient.
  • Loss of sleep is one the adverse affects of ED and other urologic issues.
  • Sexual activity is really important for most men, the loss of which can lead to depression.
  • Professionals like counselors and sleep medication specialists should be an important part of the overall treatment plan for men suffering with urological problems.

“Men who have erectile dysfunction, prostate problems, or other urologic conditions are often at higher risk for depression and sleep disorders.”
